Navigators look for adult support

Upper Dearne Valley Navigators has grown from an idea to a fully functioning and stable youth group, one of the largest in the area in the space of just four years. The group is now looking to grow from its original team by adding new adults to help with the growth of the group.

There are many options for adults wishing to volunteer.

Trustee Role - As a registered charity, Navigators need to have a board of Trustees. Currently, all our Trustees are actively involved in the running of meetings, with the exception of our Secretary. We would like to add two new parent trustees. or perhaps an outsider with an interest in seeing the group grow.

The Trustee role requires attendance at around 10 meetings each year. These meetings are regular and are kept short because the regular meetings mean that business is always being monitored and issues are not allowed to develop. Essentially, the Trustee role is about managing the group, rather than running youth sections, so, if someone wishes to assist but is not keen on working with young people directly, then this is an ideal role.

Section Leader - This is the hands-on part. Here it can be in a supporting role - that extra pair of eyes, or taking control of the section for a game, or an activity, or perhaps taking on the whole section. We have two distinct sections at present : Junior Navigators - age 7 - 10, and Navigators aged 10 - 18.  However, there is scope to ad a "Meerkats" section from 5 - 7 years, and to split the Navigators to create a Navigator Mentor section 15 - 18 years.

Activity Leader - Do you have a specialist skill? Any skill? Car Mechanic, IT wizard, Artist, Kayaking, Climbing, Hillwalking, Caving, Sailing, etc.?  If you have and you would like to help Navigators out by joining us as a skills instructor, then please do contact us.

All of the above require a DBS Check*. All will require some Safeguarding Training and First Aid Training will be offered to all who work with our young people.

* DBS Check - Every applicant working with young people unsupervised, or on more than one session per month will require a DBS check. Please be aware that we are not interested in dusty old cautions or convictions for shoplifting, or the hazards of a misspent youth.

Conviction or Caution for a Sex Offence would be a complete bar to working with the Group.
